ÿþHMO vs. PPO: Battle between Two Individual Health Insurance Plans

from:

What s in store for me?

These days consumers are becoming smart buyers. Perhaps this is due to the continuous rise of prices in most commodities. Oftentimes, people compare prices before they get hold of a product. They often weigh the possible consequences that may be brought upon by their decision.

Obtaining an individual health insurance plan is one tough decision. Some individuals are apprehensive getting one due to its costly payment. However with careful planning, you can come up with a health insurance plan that is worthy of its price.

Frequently, when a health insurance plan is the heart of conversations, the battle between HMO and PPO is always talked about. You can start getting some similarities overview between an HMO and PPO:

In-House Networks

HMO is Health Managed Organization. It is one of the many types of health insurance in the United States. HMO operates in such a way that the organization get in touch with pools of doctors and health care providers. They also contact certain hospitals. Afterwards, from the pool of manpower, the organization will then form an in-house network.

PPO or Preferred Provider Organization offers health care assistance and treatments to its members with lower medical rates. The organization links with a pool of physicians and health care units such as hospitals to provide care and treatment to its members.

Managed Finances

Both HMO and PPO are major types of managed health care plan which aims to reduce the health and medical expenses of its members. Thus, you can make sure that your finances allotted for health and medical uses are properly managed with an HMO or PPO.

Every health care plan also has its differences apart from the likeness they pose. Hence, the difference between an HMO vs. PPO is:

Choice of Health Care Providers

As an HMO member, you are restricted in selecting a physician and hospital care units within in-house network to take advantage of reduced medical payment.

On the other hand, when you are enrolled under PPO, you have the option to select a physician even though it is not part of the in-house network. You can still take advantage of discounted medical payment.

Fees

Studies and surveys show that HMO is said to have lower deductibles compared to PPO. Additionally, co-payment is believed to be low when medical service is due.

Referrals

More individuals complain that HMO has delayed health and medical service. This is due to its referral process that they require. For instance, you need to see a specialist, before you proceed consulting a specialist, you should secure a referral from the organization or else they will not cover the said medical help you sought for.

On the other hand, this is not necessary with a PPO. They do not require any referrals if you wish to see a specialist or other physician. Hence, it gives you convenience.

There is no perfect health insurance plan. All you need to do is seek for a health insurance plan which can give you good-quality health service as well as properly manage your medical finances.

To some HMO is well-apt for them, while others still prefer PPO. Both has its advantages and disadvantages. You have the option where to go. Choose something that fits your lifestyle. Start with the basic thing research and evaluate, then come up with a decision.
