The Problem with Individual Health Insurance in California
from:
The state of California has been fast-forwarded into the front ranks of economic, social and political entities. With a population approaching thirty-five million and a trillion dollar plus economy in over a drive, California has moved into the front line of global entertainment, technology and virtually every other aspect of human creativity. However, all this growth and prosperity has a price. California finds itself struggling with continuing challenges in aspects of general health and well being of its population.
Let’s face it. In California, like in any other states in US, health insurance purchase is voluntary. There is neither a system of universal coverage nor any mandate that employers offer or individual offers coverage. In this voluntary setting, we can’t help the fact that many people choose not to be insured. Many Policy makers and analysts agree that the primary cause for this may be attributed to low income and high premiums.
In today’s health condition of Americans, health insurance is a necessity. It should be one of their top priorities to obtain. Since you can’t possibly know when u can get sick or get injured. It is best that u get something that will help you during difficult times of your life. Indeed, it is advisable to secure yourself with a medical insurance. If you expect to be a heavy-user of a health service and you are unemployed or if no group health insurance covers you then it is best that you buy individual medical coverage. Individual Health Insurance should be the best alternative for those people who are not covered through employment and are not eligible for publicly subsidized health coverage But Californians resident find it difficult to get and maintain health insurance because of economic problems.
Nearly eight percent of non-elderly Californians, or about 2.4 million people, are participating in the individual insurance market. Regardless of this number, we still can’t deny that the current California individual medical insurance market is still relatively small, because only a fraction of those who do not have other medical care insurance options buy individual coverage. Aside from it, the Californian State and federal laws regulating individual insurances are less restrictive and provide fewer protections. Hence buying health insurance is not attracting offer for them.
Approximately 6.2 million Californians or 21 percent of non elderly population went without health insurance for at least this early past years. Study shows that Californians thinks that health insurance however important cannot compete with foods, housing transportation and utilities. The growth of uninsured population in California accounted for one third of the increase in the number of uninsured in the entire United States. Sad to know this, but without reducing the medical insurance through subsidies or other policies and without increasing the availability and attractiveness of public medical insurance programs such as Medical and Healthy Families this scenario will continue.
Looking for the best individual health insurance that will suit you is not an easy job. It can be very complex, challenging and tiring. Why? This is due to the fact that products and prices available in the market are rapidly growing in number; comparing these available options can confuse your mind. There are various hindrances that may arise that you have to consider before a person can obtain medical coverage. Individual demographic profile such as age, gender, geographic region, and health history and health status can be a barrier in obtaining coverage. It may sound unfair but individual policies are often unavailable to older people. Premiums can be very expensive to those with pre- existing health condition. Aside from it, Californian state and federal legal protections differ significantly depending on whether consumers are entering the individual market for the first time or a significant break in coverage or are making a direct transition from group coverage. California should do something to help their resident to obtain individual health insurance because their complex rules only aggravate what the people faces in choosing the best policy for them.
Increase in small companies that no longer provide employee health coverage should increase insured individuals in California. But because of high cost, limited consumer protections, and regulatory complexity of the individual market California’s aim to reduce the number of uninsured individual will be difficult to achieve in the soonest possible time.
