It is a time for a big celebration because you have finished a college degree. But before you graduate, there are future plans in which you are going to pursue. It could either be finding a job or preparing to continue your studies in a graduate school.
Most graduate students are in the state of predicament in terms of health insurance. Health insurance coverage are being provided by most graduate schools thus some of the institutions are making it mandatory for students to get a health care insurance. As a graduate student, you are required to get this type of insurance unless you can prove to them that you have already a health insurance provider. The reasons why it is mandatory are:
- It ensures that high quality services are accessible for graduate students.
- The health services being provided are reliable.
- It provides a buffer from devastating costs of medication due to hospital visits, injuries and serious illnesses.
Certain universities are offering a waiver if ever you already have health insurance plans from other provider. You are eligible for this waiver if your insurance meets the requirements of the university thus charges are removed from the tuition and fees. The graduate students are entitled for a 250 dollars subsidy each semester to defray the insurance premiums costs.
Students however should be cautious because some colleges or universities graduate student health insurance plans are offering attractive benefits which are not enough for giving financial security from unexpected expenses. Make sure that you have enough time to research and study all the possible options from different institutions to obtain the best plans for you.
It is important for students to check graduate schools for availability of a graduate student health insurance, its terms and conditions if they are planning to pursue graduate studies. Don’t add insurance problems together with the issues you are going to face while studying.
Students might ask why they still need a graduate health insurance. You should realize that health care costs is skyrocketing every year and it is a fact that you will be receiving economical primary student care from Student Health Services which does entirely give all your potential health care needs.
You might become one of the students needing an illness or injury treatment which requires special care, hospitalization, or surgery. This will result in a huge amount of medical bills which can become a permanent hindrance in your educational career and goals.
