The Real Score of Medical Insurance Status in Texas
from:
Nicknamed as the Lone Star State and having the motto of “friendship”, Texas is considered to be one of the famous states in the country, being the hometown of U.S. President George W. Bush and the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets. It is known for its large size (second to Alaska in area), and things are also said to be bigger when you are in Texas.
Does it follow that Texas’ concern for medical care is also bigger?
It seems that it follows the same trends. Houston hosts the internationally-renowned Texas Medical Center, which is the home of the biggest medical research in the world. Presently, there are 42 member-institutions of the Texas Medical Center which includes the following:
• Thirteen renowned hospitals;
• Two medical schools;
• Two specialty institutions;
• Four nursing schools; and
• Several schools that concentrates on the field of public health, dentistry, pharmacy, and other health-related careers.
However, despite being the home of the largest medical research in the world, Texas has the largest number of uninsured population in the United States at 25.1 percent. That is why in May 2006, the state health department initiated the program Code Red to lessen the number of uninsured Texas residents. This is formed by 10 Texas-based academic health institutions and several large and small business employees, various Texas-based health care providers, insurance companies, and concerned Texas consumers.
In addition to the Code Red program of the Texas state health department, various studies have been conducted to investigate the real situation behind the medical insurance status in the Lone Star State. These include the following reports obtained by different entities and its contents:
• The Uninsured: A Hidden Burden on Texas Employers and Communities- it is created by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in 2005 wherein it provides an extensive description of the uninsured population of Texas on various counties and cities.
• Research, Planning, and Evaluation Monthly Program Statistics Reports- done by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission between October 2002 up to August 2003 where it provides statistical data showing the following variables:
o Basic demographics;
o Employment and unemployment rate;
o Cost of living indices;
o Uninsured population by different categories; and
o Medicaid enrolment.
• Deep in the Heart of Texas: Uninsured Children in the Lone Star State- done by the FamiliesUSA, this report unfolds some of the trends of uninsured children and the factors affecting their capability of obtaining a medical insurance. It includes census data that is used to establish the current trend.
• Health Care Workforce Data and Links - done by the Texas Department of State Health and Services, this online report gives the figures on the coverage of supply of health care professionals in the state and counties.
What the health authorities wants is to know the real situation of medical insurance in the state. The cost of medical services is escalating nowadays, and it is for the welfare of every individual residing in Texas to avail of medical insurance policies. This will serve as an assurance that their medical needs will be attended promptly.
Texas health authorities will not stop and will be committed on uplifting the health condition of their citizen. Studies and other programs about medical insurance will not be over unless all citizens are already insured.
